In my youth, I was asked to give up a lot of things. Christians discovered the evils of smoking before the Surgeon General. Movies were rare, and alcohol was out. So were dancing, bowling, pool and some forms of skating.
Here was the problem. People would go to revival meetings, be convicted by a great move of the Holy Spirit and commit to behavior changes. Later they would impose these changes in conduct on others who hadn't gone to the revival meetings, resulting in conflict and rebellion.
As it turned out, people were following man-made rules (as the Bible warns against) and not just God's.
The Bible is the most trustworthy book there is, thoroughly documented by thousands of manuscript portions, further verified by the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. It contains everything we need in terms of essential doctrinal beliefs and our life's conduct.
As I said elsewhere in this blog, one man I know thought about what he'd have to give up in order to be a follower of Jesus, but he discovered so much more that he gained.
